MORE Delivery Updates: Yearbooks & CNY DVDs

Yearbook Update  & CNY DVD – Sept. 2

Final Yearbook delivery planned for Wednesday, 2 September from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Dragon and Phoenix Spark Park. Yearbooks that were pre-purchased for 2019-2020 will be available for pick up. We will have a few of those for sale as well – $40 cash; first come, first served.

CNY DVDs that were pre-purchased will be available as well.

School Supply Delivery

We will be receiving school supplies at the end of this week. There will be a parent reaching out to you on your grade’s individual Facebook pages and/or via email for distribution information.

Because school is still closed, administration has advised us that we are unable to schedule a collective pick-up time on campus. We understand that this is not ideal but are trying our best to ensure that parents have access to the supplies they have paid for.

Please see below for the volunteer parent in charge of distributing supplies for each grade. You should receive information from them within the next week. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to PM Beryl or send email to secretary@mimspto.org.

Yearbook Delivery

The yearbook team is also affected by the fact that our campus is closed.

The yearbook team will be available for yearbook pickup on Saturday morning, 22 August, from 8-11 am at Grady Park (1700 Yorktown, 77056 at San Felipe). We’ll be on the southwest side, in the parking lot near the tennis courts.

Please wear masks and plan to be distanced. While we miss you and want to hang out, this delivery is just a fast drive-by pickup.

If you are unable to pick up on Saturday, you can do one of the following:

  • Have someone else pick up for you – be sure to have written permission that includes the student(s) name(s)
  • We’ll announce a second pick-up date in early September.
  • You can contact yearbook@mimspto.org and we’ll do our best to work things out with you.

We will have some additional yearbooks for sale. They are first come, first served for $40 cash only.

Thanks Margaret – Temporary Parliamentarian

Not that the board voted at our recent meeting to appoint Margaret Pinkston as a replacement parliamentarian until the PTO membership (you!) select a new one at our PTO elections. Thank you so much, Margaret for jumping in to support the board!

The PTO board parliamentarian position was vacant, as Derek Sirmans had left the role.

Bylaws state that PTO board can vote on a replacement for the remainder of the term (until we hold elections in September) with written notice to you all. Written notice is provided here and on Facebook.

Board Elections & PTO Meetings

PTO will hold board and SDMC elections for the 2020-2021 school year in September. We are also launching virtual PTO general meetings so that we can discuss what the PTO has planned, get your feedback, and keep supporting our students, teachers, and families.

You can read the official description of the PTO Board member positions in the current bylaws, and nothing here removes those responsibilities, but it helps to know the reality (or at least the hopes!), too. Here’s what the 19-20 board members have to say about our positions as you consider whether you’d like to nominate yourself or a friend, and who you’ll vote for in 20-21.

In a future post, we’ll include statements and bios for those running for the board in 20-21. Nominations remain open through 31 August by emailing parliamentarian@mimspto.org. Especially as we focus on building morale and supporting justice in our school and community, we hope to see more of you raise your hands to contribute!

Election Timeline

  • 21 August, 12 noon (online) – virtual PTO General meeting for all members – we’ll share/introduce the current nominees for the board and any other updates we have for the school year. Have agenda items? Send to President@mimspto.org and secretary@mimspto.org
  • 11 September 31 August – nominations close for PTO Board and SDMC positions. Please send nominations to parliamentarian@mimspto.org
  • 18 September, 12 noon (online)- virtual PTO General meeting for all members. We’ll share/introduce any additional nominees for the board and any other updates we have for the school year. Have agenda items? Send to President@mimspto.org and secretary@mimspto.org
  • 18-21 September – Voting online for all members for PTO Board and SDMC representative. Per our PTO Bylaws, each PTO member (parent, legal guardian, teacher, staff member) can vote once. (If you inadvertently vote more than once, your vote will not be counted.)

News from HISD: P-EBT & Uniforms

Sharing a few pieces of information from HISD in case any MIMS families missed them!

P-EBT Deadline Extended

All MIMS families are eligible for the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT). The deadline has been extended again, through 21 August. This benefits supports all those families who had been taking advantage of the free meals through HISD by giving a one-time benefit on a debit card for use in buying food. Read more about the benefit at the HISD site and access the application.

Uniform Policy

HISD has announced that no uniforms will be required this year for students. Students will still be expected to follow appropriate dress code guidelines set by our campus.

Tax Free Weekend

The Texas tax free weekend is coming up between 7-9 August 2020, both online and in person. The Texas Comptroller site has more details. Even if we don’t have to wear uniforms this year, you can also purchase school supplies, shoes, backpacks, and other items.

What we know about 20-21

What do we know about the 20-21 school year? The answer is… not much. But when we do, we’ll post it here. For now:

  1. HISD has released their 20-21 school calendar, although we don’t yet know everything that means for how we will do things.

  2. Order your school supplies by July 1 to use our online store.
  3. Yearbook publishing (2019-2020 book) was delayed by quarantine but is now back on track. Yearbooks should be delivered to our school in early August for delivery.
  4. We plan to open uniform sales here on the PTO site in July.
  5. The 2019-2020 PTO board will continue to meet to address needs as they arise and to begin the 20-21 budget and planning process to hand off to the new board in the fall.  Our current plan, depending on what happens in this always-changing situation is:
  • You should complete your nominations for PTO board between now and August by emailing your interest to parliamentarian@mimspto.org
  • We hope to hold a general meeting in early August, where we will help new families understand the school, to update everyone on the plans for the year, and to introduce nominees for next year’s board.
  • We’ll follow that with a meeting in September where PTO members will all vote on your 20-21 board.

If you have a nomination for yourself or someone else for the PTO board, feedback, needs that we can help with, or ideas to share, please let us know. In the meantime, keep up with updates from the board via our website at http://mimspto.org.

Committee Update: Upload Photos for Yearbook

Online yearbook sales have now concluded, but there will be some yearbooks for sale in May ($40, cash only at that time). Look for the books to be delivered in mid- to late-May.

In the meantime, we are still working on our book and we want YOUR help! Please upload or email photos of your student and their classmates and friends at school events. In addition, if you are the sponsor of a club, activity, or sport, please share the successes and experiences your group has had so far this year. Won a competition? Attended an exciting event? Sold a lot of books or cookies? If students and families at MIMS participated in it, we want to KNOW and cover it so that you can remember it.

Volunteer: Staff Appreciation lunch

Our February PTO staff appreciation lunch is scheduled on 2/21 (Friday). In honor of Black History Month, our lunch will feature African American culinary delights for the first time! Some amazing parents worked hard on the menu and catering options, but we are still looking for more food donations and more volunteers to help on that day.

Please see the signup sheet for details. Nonperishable items can be dropped off in the community room in advance. For perishable food, please drop off on 2/21 before 10:30AM because the first group starts their lunch at 11AM. If you donate a dish, please specify its ingredients, or whether it’s vegetarian, dairy-free, or contains any tree nuts.

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e094ba8aa2fa4f85-february

Thank you for signing up! It is only with your generous donations and volunteering to set up, serve or/and clean up that we can make PTO lunches possible. Our teachers and staff will truly appreciate it!
